Out of Control Emotions

Jonah 4:1–11 | The Story of Jonah & the Mercy of God

Have you ever been more upset about something happening to you than about what is happening to someone else?

In Jonah 4, we see a surprising side of the prophet. Instead of celebrating that an entire city of people turned to God, Jonah became angry. He knew God was gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. But Jonah struggled when that same mercy was extended to the people of Nineveh.

Jonah wanted God to destroy Nineveh, but God's heart was to transform it.

God used a simple plant, a worm, and a scorching wind to expose Jonah's heart. Jonah was more concerned about his own comfort than the eternal lives of thousands of people.

Here are two important lessons from Jonah 4:

  1. Our emotions can reveal our hearts. Jonah's anger exposed his selfishness and shortsightedness. Sometimes we can know the character of God without allowing that character to shape our own hearts.

  2. God's mercy is bigger than our preferences. Jonah wanted God's judgment for Nineveh, but God wanted to show them compassion. God's grace can be uncomfortable when it reaches people we don't think deserve it.

As we follow Jesus, we are reminded that we have received the very mercy we are sometimes reluctant to extend to others.

Jonah wanted to skip God's lesson and go straight to God's blessings. But God was more interested in changing Jonah's heart than simply making Jonah comfortable.

A Question to Consider:

Are there people in your life you would rather see God judge than see God transform?

May we become a people who don't just receive God's love, but gladly show that same love to others.

Know the Love. Show the Love.
