Let’s Build a Ministry Mall in Haiku: Principles of Leadership Multiplication for Growing Churches in Hawaiʻi

Let’s Build a Ministry Mall in Haiku: Principles of Leadership Multiplication for Growing Churches in Hawaiʻi

Let’s Build a Ministry Mall in Haiku

Lessons on Leadership Multiplication from the November Evangelical Ministry Meeting in Hawaiʻi

In November, ministry leaders from across Hawaiʻi gathered for a powerful time of encouragement, sharpening, and vision casting. Hosted at Kalihi Union Church, the meeting brought together evangelical ministry teams from different islands and church contexts to focus on one central theme:

Healthy growth happens through leadership multiplication.

For our team at Hope Chapel North Shore, this gathering was especially meaningful during this unique season as I have the privilege of serving as interim pastor. The conversations, content, and fellowship provided both clarity and courage for the road ahead.

Kalihi Union Church itself was a fitting host. It opens its campus to many congregations each weekend—hosting more than 15 services—demonstrating that Kingdom impact expands when space is shared and leaders are developed.

And that’s where the vision began to crystallize for us:

What if we built a “Ministry Mall” in Haiku?

Not a shopping center—but a multiplying center. A place where ministries thrive side by side. A hub where leaders are raised up, not just relied upon.

The Big Idea: From Addition to Multiplication

The main session, led by Rev. Ariel C. Jornales, ThD (EFCP President), centered on principles of leadership multiplication. The shift is simple but profound:

  • Addition says: “How can I grow this ministry?”

  • Multiplication says: “How can we grow more leaders?”

Churches plateau when leadership is centralized.
Churches flourish when leadership is multiplied.

Healthy ministry is not built on a few strong personalities, but on many equipped servants.

7 Principles of Leadership Multiplication

Here are key takeaways that can serve churches and ministry leaders seeking healthy growth:

1. Vision Must Be Shared, Not Stored

If the vision lives only in the pastor’s heart, growth will stall.
Multiplying leaders requires clearly communicating mission, values, and direction so others can carry it.

2. Leaders Develop Leaders

Healthy leaders don’t just serve—they train.
Jesus modeled this with the Twelve. Paul did it with Timothy. Multiplication is biblical.

3. Structure Supports Growth

Kalihi Union Church’s multi-service model works because structure makes room for ministry diversity. Growth without structure creates burnout. Structure without mission creates bureaucracy. Both must align.

4. Space Must Be Created for Others

If we fill every role ourselves, we unintentionally block future leaders. Multiplication requires releasing control and making room for new voices.

5. Character Before Competency

Skill can be trained. Character must be formed.
Healthy multiplication focuses on spiritual maturity, not just ministry ability.

6. Empowerment Requires Trust

Leaders must be trusted with real responsibility. Delegation without authority frustrates. Empowerment builds ownership.

7. Think Generationally

Multiplication is not about immediate results—it’s about future fruit.
The question shifts from “What can we accomplish this year?” to
“What kind of leaders will exist here five years from now?”

What Could a “Ministry Mall” Look Like in Haiku?

Picture this:

  • A campus where youth ministry, prayer gatherings, outreach initiatives, and discipleship groups all flourish.

  • Multiple ministry expressions under one shared mission.

  • Leaders who are raised up locally rather than imported.

  • A culture where serving is normal and leadership development is intentional.

Just as a mall hosts different stores under one roof (Specifically referencing the huge mall in the Philipines in Pastor Ariel’s presentation: https://letsbuildamallinhaiku.my.canva.site ) a multiplying church with this “ministry mall format” hosts diverse ministries under one unified vision.

Each ministry distinct.
All aligned.
All growing.

One body. Many Members. c.f. 1 Corinthians 12; Romans 12; 1 Peter 4; Ephesian.

Why This Matters Now for Hope Chapel North Shore

This is a strategic season for our church family.

As interim pastor, my heart is not merely to maintain momentum—but to strengthen foundations. Healthy pastoral transitions require leadership depth. Multiplication ensures sustainability beyond any single leader.

If we want a thriving future, we must invest in multiplying leaders today. I thank God for the opportunity to learn from this session shoulder to shoulder with some very special leaders from Hope Chapel North Shore.

Practical Next Steps for Churches

If you’re a ministry leader reading this, here are tangible steps to begin building your own “Ministry Mall”:

  1. Identify two emerging leaders and begin mentoring them intentionally.

  2. Clarify and write down your ministry’s mission and values.

  3. Audit your current leadership structure—where are the bottlenecks?

  4. Create one new leadership opportunity in the next 90 days.

  5. Celebrate servant leaders publicly and often.

Multiplication doesn’t happen accidentally. It happens intentionally.

Final Encouragement

The November meeting was more than a gathering—it was a reminder:

The Kingdom grows best when leaders are developed, not just tasks completed.

Kalihi Union Church shows what’s possible when shared space and shared leadership intersect.

Now it’s our turn.

Let’s build something in Haiku that multiplies.
Let’s build leaders.
Let’s build ministries.
Let’s build a Ministry Mall.

I don’t know how this will all work, but as we read in Unit 7, Day 2 of Experiencing God today, “without faith, it is impossible to please God.” Hebrews 11:6.

God’s Vision for True Love

God’s Vision for True Love

A Sermon from Philippians 3:3 | Hope Chapel North Shore

God’s Vision for True Love

Philippians 3:3

As a church family at Hope Chapel North Shore, we are walking through Experiencing God and hiding His Word in our hearts. Each week we have memorized Scripture that reminds us that following Jesus is not about performance — it’s about relationship.

From John 15:5 reminding us that apart from Him we can do nothing, to Matthew 22:37 calling us to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, Scripture consistently points to one central truth: real love is relational, not religious.

Joy From a Jail Cell

The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians from prison. Not comfort. Not freedom. Not ideal conditions. Yet the theme of Philippians is joy.

In Philippians 3, Paul warns believers not to rely on outward religious appearance. Instead, he describes God’s true people this way:

“For we are the circumcision, the ones who worship by the Spirit of God, boast in Christ Jesus, and do not put confidence in the flesh.” (Philippians 3:3)

This is God’s vision for true love.

1. Worship by the Spirit of God

True love is not mechanical or performance-based. It is not about checking spiritual boxes. It is about a living relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Religion says, “Do the right things so God will accept you.” Relationship says, “You are accepted in Christ — now walk with Him.”

Worshiping by the Spirit means listening for God’s voice today, not just repeating methods that worked yesterday. It means walking by faith, not by sight.

Walking by Faith Through the Fog

Florence Chadwick once swam for 15 hours toward the California coast in thick fog. Exhausted, she gave up — only to discover she was less than half a mile from shore. She later said, “If I could have seen the shore, I would have made it.”

Vision matters. When we fix our eyes on what God is doing — even when circumstances are unclear — we find strength to keep going.

2. Glory in Christ Jesus

Paul had an impressive spiritual résumé. Yet he counted it all loss compared to knowing Christ. True love does not boast in personal achievement. It boasts in Jesus.

Our confidence is not in our goodness — it is in His grace.

3. Put No Confidence in the Flesh

Outward religion can look impressive, but God sees the heart. It is possible to appear spiritual while missing intimacy with Him.

Obedience is not about copying yesterday’s method. It is about listening to God’s voice today.

A Call to True Love

As a disciple-making church, Hope Chapel North Shore is not aiming for activity alone. We are pursuing intimacy with God.

Are we worshiping by the Spirit? Are we boasting in Christ? Are we releasing confidence in ourselves?

God’s vision for true love is deeper than ritual and bigger than romance. It is a Spirit-filled relationship where we trust Him fully, follow Him faithfully, and love Him wholeheartedly.

And when we do — we will not leave the same way we came.

Experiencing God – Week 4 Focus

Choong Man Kim has personally walked through the Experiencing God study and will be introducing Week 4, centered on the truth:

“God pursues a love relationship with each of us that is real and personal.”

This week invites us to move beyond knowing about God and into a lived, relational love with Him—one that transforms how we listen, obey, and follow.

Scripture Focus:

Matthew 22:37–38 (ESV)
“And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.’

John 14:21 (ESV)
“Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

These passages remind us that love for God is not abstract—it is personal, obedient, and deeply relational.

Experiencing God: Join Us for a Church-Wide Journey in 2026

Experiencing God: A Church-Wide Journey Begins January 2026

I am thrilled to invite you to join the entire Hope Chapel North Shore ‘ohana for a life-changing spiritual journey called Experiencing God. More than a sermon series, this is a church-wide movement—a season of intentionally learning to recognize where God is at work around us and how He invites us to join Him.

Decades ago, this study deeply shaped believers and churches across our Island, creating a culture of expectancy for how God might move in everyday lives and ordinary circumstances. Recently, Nicole and I worked through the “Experiencing God” workbook together, and it profoundly transformed the way we see God’s presence and respond to His leading.

Now, we sense God inviting our whole church family to lean in together and experience Him afresh.

What to Expect Over the 10-Week Experience

For the next ten weeks, Hope Chapel North Shore will journey through this study side by side. Here’s how it works:

Daily Study

Each participant will engage with five days of guided personal study each week, helping you look for God's activity, hear His voice, and respond to His leading.

Small Group Discussion

Your life group/‘ohana group will have the option to meet weekly for conversation, reflection, and encouragement. These gatherings will be an important space to share what God is stirring in your heart.

Weekly Sermons

Every Saturday service will focus on the same themes covered in your study that week, helping our entire church family move forward together in unity and purpose.

Kickoff Celebration — January 10, 2026

We will officially launch Experiencing God on Saturday, January 10, 2026 with a meal and a special focus on our new and existing ‘ohana groups. We can’t wait to celebrate what God is going to do as we begin this journey together!

Study Guide Information

The official Experiencing God study guide typically costs more than $20, but because we want everyone to participate, we are offering it for a subsidized cost of just $10 per person for those joining a life group.

You can purchase your study guide:

Please make sure to pick up your book before the end of 2025 so we can begin the new year ready and equipped. This is also a great time to consider joining a life group—or even starting a new one.

Let’s Experience God Together

Whether you’ve taken this study before or are exploring it for the first time, I genuinely hope you’ll join us with a fresh Experiencing God book. I believe God will use this study to transform our lives, deepen our relationships, and strengthen our church family in powerful ways.

God keeps His promises.
From the prophets of old to the manger in Bethlehem, the arrival of Jesus fulfills the longing of generations. This week, as we look with “Eyes of Faith,” we remember that God is faithful, and His plans always come to completion.

WEEK 2 — IMMANUEL: God With Us

God draws near.
Even in uncertainty, Jesus enters our world with compassion, comfort, and presence. Immanuel reminds us that we are not alone—God is with us in every moment.

WEEK 3 — HOSANNA: Lord, Save Us

Our Savior King has come—and will come again.
“Hosanna” is both a cry for rescue and a declaration of praise. As we celebrate Christ’s first coming, we lift our eyes to His promise to make all things new.

You’re Invited — Bring a Friend!
