In Jonah 1:4–6, we find Jonah asleep in the middle of a storm while the sailors around him are doing everything they can to save the ship. In our September 5 message, “In The Same Boat: God’s Mercy To Love Our Neighbors,” we looked at what God can teach us through both Jonah and the sailors about trusting Him and loving the people He has placed around us.
This passage gives us three things to consider. First, realize that the Lord is the Most High God. Second, reorder what we value for the sake of what is ultimate. And third, remember that perhaps many more people will experience the mighty mercy of God. The storm caused Jonah to face what really mattered, and it reminds us to wake up to God, His Word, and His people.
It also leaves us with a question worth thinking about this week: Who has God placed in your boat?
God calls us to love our neighbors, including people who may be different from us. That means being willing to listen, learn, seek the good of others, and put our faith into practical action. Our faith is not meant to stay private. It should make a difference in the way we love and serve the people around us.
